Three Simple Secrets to Using Intuition To Skyrocket Your Sales
- By Dr. Lin Morel
Intuition; gut hunch; inner wisdom. The Radom House Dictionary defines intuition as “Quick perception of truth or knowledge without conscious attention or reasoning.” Wouldn’t it be great if you could harness that power of knowing what your next step should be, when to ask for the sale, who to hire, and the most effective way to build your bottom line? You can.
There are many ways to develop intuition. Today I’ll share three that have proved effective for thousands of my clients. First, a word of caution: respect your intuition. It is a sacred gift of connection to a world much larger than your own mind can conceive. Use this gift, hone it and you will give your self the winner’s edge.
For the purposes of this article, we’ll assume that your business is aligned with your own core values. By that I mean that you love what you do. Real success and intuition come more easily when you are in alignment with your own goals and deepest heart’s desire. Doc Childre and Howard Martin, in HeartMath Solution, say that “Heart intuition or intelligence brings the freedom and power to accomplish what the mind, even with all the disciplines or affirmations in the world, cannot do if it's out-of-sync with the heart.” The heart is the knower. If your heart is not “on board” with your goals, then you labor against your own body’s wisdom and intuition.
Current research bears this out. The February 2006 issue of Science published a University of Amsterdam study about “deliberation without attention effect” (intuition) on consumer’s ability to choose the best product. They discovered that the conscious mind was fine for simple purchases, but that overall, consumers did much better with post purchase satisfaction when they relied on their unconscious mind’s input for complex decisions, such as purchasing a car or home. Another study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2004, found that the heart itself is involved in the processing and decoding of intuitive information. Heart rates changed prior to any knowledge of the future event. Folklore and science have finally met!
Plant the Seeds of Intuition
Intuition flourishes when seeds of intention are planted in the imagination. What do you intend to accomplish? When you are clear about your intention, then your attention will direct you to people, places and things that you need in order to succeed. Pay attention to everyone you meet. Don’t let appearances fool you. The key to your next big deal may be sitting next to you on the bus. Trust yourself!
Tending your Crop
The easiest way to develop intuition is to let go and get out of the way. Set aside expectations. Become a scientist. Observe your surroundings. When the phone rings, ask yourself who is calling. Use your intuition muscles and keep a journal. Over the years I have found that listening and acting on that small voice is far less painful than resisting. Through practice, you will learn your intuition is trustworthy.
Pull the weeds
The second method has to do with the heart. Take time and become quiet each day, even if it is only in the shower or bath! Set aside expectations of what you think “should” happen, and become still. Since the mind always wants to “do” something, you might give it a word or phrase and focus on the quality of that word. This will bring you into the present moment. Here is a huge clue….intuition is only available when we are in the moment. Pull the weeds of worry, judgment and fear. Don’t feed them. When they appear, use them to remind you to stop, be still and listen. Instead, notice your heart beat or physical sensations. Intuition can be felt physically. Learn to listen with the ears of the heart. It might save your business or your life.
Water the garden
In a drought, even hearty plants wilt. As business owners, if we don’t take time to recharge, we deal with the demon of diminishing returns. Pushing is over-rated. Research at the American Institute of Stress indicates that 90% of health problems are stress related. Protect your greatest asset, YOU.
Intuition works best in a climate of inner listening. If you are feeling stuck, go take a nap, walk, exercise or distract yourself for a while. Give the heart’s wisdom a chance to help. As mentioned above, the conscious mind may interfere with your ability to get the best answer. To think outside the box, step outside the box and listen to your body. This amazing vehicle needs to be recharged frequently. Some of the world’s greatest discoveries have appeared after a “time out” when the unconscious mind got a chance to put its two cents in!
Harvest the crop
Intuitive hunches are money makers. Bell Telephone, Sony, Northrop Grumman, The FAA are all clients because of hunches. Why leave money on the table, especially when your services are a gift for the receiver? That has certainly been my experience. Each time I have honored that small voice, I have been able to touch countless lives. You could call it destiny meeting desire. I do.
You harvest the crop when you have integrated your head and your heart. Both are necessary. Harness all the resources at your disposal, including intuition. It’s said that success comes from preparation meeting opportunity. I would add that opportunity knocks all the time. Let your intuition answer the door and invite the answer in. You will be amazed at the results!
